I've written hundreds of business reports and proposals in my time, but now that I am retired I have begun to write for fun. I have a memoir project underway, but haven't gotten beyond an outline yet. Revisiting my life is much harder than I expected. So, I decided to try my hand at a short story to see if I could write dialog. My first attempt was a mystery, Time Will Tell. It was easier than I expected, but I read dozens of mysteries a month so I had lots of examples to follow. While working on my family genealogy, I was struck by the fact that many of my ancestors came to the "new world" to find a better life for their families, and almost immediately got involved in the American Revolution. I thought that I'd try a story about that, but it turned into a poem. I only have the first section complete, but I hope to add more about later struggles that improved and refined our democracy. |
